Get to know Simon

I’ve always been drawn to creative work. From a young age, I was into art and drawing, starting with cartoon characters and exploring different creative outlets. I knew early on that I wanted a career that allowed me to build and create.

After university, I joined a design agency where I started in graphic design and illustration.

Around that time, web and digital were rapidly growing, and it became clear that this was the direction the industry was heading.

I adapted, developed new skills, and gradually moved into web design.

How My Career Has Evolved

After my time at the agency, I went freelance and started running my own business. That gave me independence and a lot of hands-on experience across a variety of projects.

Today, my role as Web & Digital Director at Tomlinson Solutions is very different. I’m responsible for managing projects, working closely with clients, supporting apprentices, and helping drive the overall direction of our web and digital services. It’s a step up in both responsibility and scope.

Lessons From Early On

Working for myself taught me the importance of structure and discipline. Without it, it’s easy to lose focus. Building a routine early on helped me stay productive and consistent.

Another key lesson has been staying adaptable. The digital space doesn’t stand still, so keeping up with new tools, trends, and ways of working has always been essential.

Key Moments That Shaped My Approach

One of the early projects that stood out was working with Wookey Hole Caves. It introduced me to a more account management-focused way of working, where maintaining a strong client relationship was just as important as delivering the work itself.

Since then, larger and more complex web projects have continued to shape how I approach things. More recently, my time at Tomlinson Solutions has strengthened my focus on security and performance alongside design, giving me a more rounded approach to building websites.

Joining Tomlinson Solutions

Moving into my current role has been a refreshing change. It’s given me the opportunity to take on new challenges, particularly around leading a team and working more collaboratively.

Being part of a team has made a big difference. Compared to freelancing, where you can become quite set in your own approach, working alongside others encourages new ideas and continuous improvement.

What I Enjoy About the Industry

One of the best parts of working in web and digital is the variety. Every project is different, and you’re constantly exposed to new challenges and industries.

I also enjoy the opportunity to support and develop others coming into the field. Passing on knowledge is something I’ve come to value more over time.

The Role of Creativity

Creativity is still central to what I do, but it goes beyond visuals. A successful website needs to do more than look good, it needs to perform well, support business goals, and remain secure.

Balancing design with functionality and security is what really defines good digital work today.

Advice for Getting Started

If you’re starting out, focus on learning as much as possible and stay curious. Don’t limit yourself to what you do day-to-day, explore new ideas, trends, and tools in your own time as well.

Pay attention to the details, develop your own style, and be open to learning from others. That combination will take you a long way.
